To the distress occasioned by unwanted developments in his order were soon to be added a series of physical infirmities and painful, useless medical interventions. During his last two years of grievous illness and physical suffering, Francis dictated his Testament—his last act as founder of the order of lesser brothers. Perhaps hoping against hope, he demanded that the Testament be read with, and as a guide to, the Rule and that no gloss—that is, no moderating language—be allowed to blunt the sharpness of its requirements; the simple poverello had, prophetically, seen the future and tried to prevent it (fruitlessly, it turns out). In September 1226, Francis, well aware that “sister death” was near, asked to be taken to the Portiuncula. He died on October 3, 1226, as the story of Christ’s Passion, at his request, was being read to him.
